WHAT WE BELIEVE

WHAT WE BELIEVE

King's Table Church holds to the creedal and confessional history of the church as expressed in the Protestant Reformation and the church planting movements that issued from it.

  • I believe in God, the Father almighty,

    creator of heaven and earth.

    I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

    who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

    and born of the virgin Mary.

    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

    was crucified, died, and was buried;

    he descended to hell.

    The third day he rose again from the dead.

    He ascended to heaven

    and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

    From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    the holy catholic church,

    the communion of saints,

    the forgiveness of sins,

    the resurrection of the body,

    and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • We believe in one God,

    the Father almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth,

    of all things visible and invisible.

    And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

    the only Son of God,

    begotten from the Father before all ages,

    God from God,

    Light from Light,

    true God from true God,

    begotten, not made;

    of the same essence as the Father.

    Through him all things were made.

    For us and for our salvation

    he came down from heaven;

    he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

    and was made human.

    He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

    he suffered and was buried.

    The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

    He ascended to heaven

    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

    He will come again with glory

    to judge the living and the dead.

    His kingdom will never end.

    And we believe in the Holy Spirit,

    the Lord, the giver of life.

    He proceeds from the Father and the Son,

    and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.

    He spoke through the prophets.

    We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

    We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

    We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,

    and to life in the world to come. Amen.

  • Whoever desires to be saved should above all hold to the catholic faith.

    Anyone who does not keep it whole and unbroken will doubtless perish eternally.

    Now this is the catholic faith:

    That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity,

    neither blending their persons

    nor dividing their essence.

    For the person of the Father is a distinct person,

    the person of the Son is another,

    and that of the Holy Spirit still another.

    But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one,

    their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.

    What quality the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit has.

    The Father is uncreated,

    the Son is uncreated,

    the Holy Spirit is uncreated.

    The Father is immeasurable,

    the Son is immeasurable,

    the Holy Spirit is immeasurable.

    The Father is eternal,

    the Son is eternal,

    the Holy Spirit is eternal.

    And yet there are not three eternal beings;

    there is but one eternal being.

    So too there are not three uncreated or immeasurable beings;

    there is but one uncreated and immeasurable being.

    Similarly, the Father is almighty,

    the Son is almighty,

    the Holy Spirit is almighty.

    Yet there are not three almighty beings;

    there is but one almighty being.

    Thus the Father is God,

    the Son is God,

    the Holy Spirit is God.

    Yet there are not three gods;

    there is but one God.

    Thus the Father is Lord,

    the Son is Lord,

    the Holy Spirit is Lord.

    Yet there are not three lords;

    there is but one Lord.

    Just as Christian truth compels us

    to confess each person individually

    as both God and Lord,

    so catholic religion forbids us

    to say that there are three gods or lords.

    The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten from anyone.

    The Son was neither made nor created;

    he was begotten from the Father alone.

    The Holy Spirit was neither made nor created nor begotten;

    he proceeds from the Father and the Son.

    Accordingly there is one Father, not three fathers;

    there is one Son, not three sons;

    there is one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits.

    Nothing in this trinity is before or after,

    nothing is greater or smaller;

    in their entirety the three persons

    are coeternal and coequal with each other.

    So in everything, as was said earlier,

    we must worship their trinity in their unity

    and their unity in their trinity.

    Anyone then who desires to be saved

    should think thus about the trinity.

    But it is necessary for eternal salvation

    that one also believe in the incarnation

    of our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully.

    Now this is the true faith:

    That we believe and confess

    that our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son,

    is both God and human, equally.

    He is God from the essence of the Father,

    begotten before time;

    and he is human from the essence of his mother,

    born in time;

    completely God, completely human,

    with a rational soul and human flesh;

    equal to the Father as regards divinity,

    less than the Father as regards humanity.

    Although he is God and human,

    yet Christ is not two, but one.

    He is one, however,

    not by his divinity being turned into flesh,

    but by God’s taking humanity to himself.

    He is one,

    certainly not by the blending of his essence,

    but by the unity of his person.

    For just as one human is both rational soul and flesh,

    so too the one Christ is both God and human.

    He suffered for our salvation;

    he descended to hell;

    he arose from the dead;

    he ascended to heaven;

    he is seated at the Father’s right hand;

    from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

    At his coming all people will arise bodily

    and give an accounting of their own deeds.

    Those who have done good will enter eternal life,

    and those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.

    This is the catholic faith:

    one cannot be saved without believing it firmly and faithfully.

The Creeds

  • There is one God. The eternal God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being. Each of these persons are co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent.

    God, from eternity, commands or permits everything that comes to pass and lovingly upholds, directs, and governs all creatures and all events. God’s loving sovereignty in no way makes him the author of evil nor diminishes the will and responsibility of humanity.

    (Deuteronomy 6:4; Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-3; Psalm 115:3; Matthew 22:37-38; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

  • We believe God the Father reigns with providential care over all His creation. He is all-powerful, all-loving and all-wise. He is fatherly in His attitude toward all people.

    The Father is fully God. God the Father sent the Son, Jesus, into the world to accomplish our salvation. God the Father hears and answers our prayers. As our good Father, He disciplines us. When we come to Him in faith, He receives us, He forgives us, and rejoices when we repent and go back to him.

    (Genesis 1:1; Exodus 3:14; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 42:5-8; Isaiah 64:8; Jeremiah 10:10; Matthew 23:9; Matthew 28:19; Mark 1:10-11; John 4:24; John 14:6-13; Romans 8:14-15; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 1:5, Ephesians 4:6; 1 Timothy 1:17; Luke 15:11-32; Matthew 7:7-11; Hebrews 12:3-11)

  • We believe Jesus is the eternal Son of God. He is both fully God and fully man. Jesus Christ is two natures united in one person forever.

    10

    Jesus is fully God and took upon Himself full humanity at His incarnation. We believe in the virgin birth of Jesus, His perfect and sinless life, and His substitutionary death on the cross, and that all who repent and believe in him are justified on the ground of his shed blood. We believe that three days after His death, He was physically resurrected from the dead, signifying that God the Father accepted His payment for sin and establishing His victory over death and the grave. He is now at the right hand of Majesty on high as our great High Priest. He will come again to establish His Kingdom, righteousness, and peace.

    (Philippians 2:5-11; John 1:1, 2, 14; Luke 1:34-38; Romans 3:24; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3–5, 1 Peter 3:18; Romans 5:9; 1 Corinthians 15:1-7; Matthew 26:64)

  • We believe in the Holy Spirit. He is God, the third Person of the Triune God (co-equal in power and existence). We believe the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, awakening them to repentance and faith, and empowers those who trust in Jesus to walk with him.

    The Holy Spirit makes dead sinners alive so that they repent, believe, and are baptized into Jesus Christ. He indwells all those who repent of their sins and turn, in faith, to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit renews, guides, convicts, sanctifies, and adopts believers into God’s family. The Holy Spirit helps believers understand the Word of God, giving them strength to obey the commands of God, and keeps them until the day of Jesus’ return. The Holy Spirit is our seal and guarantee of redemption. He is the believer’s down payment of the future that is promised to them in Christ and is the sovereign giver of all guidance and spiritual gifting.. It is through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit that Christians live faithfully in obedience to Jesus. It is the will of God that all believers walk in the fullness of the Holy Spirit for the glory of Christ.

    (John 16:8–11; 2 Corinthians. 3:6; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; Romans. 8:9; Ephesians. 5:18, John 14-16; Ephesians 1:13-14).

  • We believe that Scripture was given by the inspiration of God and is therefore free from error (inerrant). We believe Scripture to be the final authority on all matters to which it speaks.

    The Old and New Testaments (i.e. the 66 books) are inerrant as originally given, were verbally inspired by God and are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice. The Scripture is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.

    (2 Timothy 3:15-16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Hebrews 4:12; Luke 24:27, Matthew 5:18; John 16:12, 13)

  • God is the creator of everyone and everything.

    God created a universe to display His power, creativity and might. In the beauty, design and intricacies of the world, we see His splendor. In this creation, God created a man named Adam to be the representative for humanity. He also made Eve to be his helper. We believe that man and woman are equally made in the image of God, to know Him and represent Him in the world. We also believe that God has created males and females with distinct gifts, tendencies and callings. Both are precious and valuable in His creation. And God called His creation—very good.

    (Psalm 19:1, 2; Genesis 1:26-28, 2:18–25)

  • We believe that all people are sinful and desperately in need of a Savior. All people are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The supreme need of all human beings is to be reconciled to the God under whose just and holy wrath we stand

    We believe that Adam, made in the image of God, distorted humanity and forfeited his relationship with God—for himself and all his descendants—by falling into sin through Satan’s temptation. As a result, all human beings are alienated from God, corrupted in every aspect of their being (e.g., physically, mentally, volitionally, emotionally, spiritually) and condemned finally and irrevocably to death—apart from God’s own gracious intervention. The only hope of all human beings is the undeserved love of this same God, who alone can rescue us and restore us to himself.

    (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 10:10-15, Genesis 3:8-24; Romans 3:22, 23, 5:12; Ephesians 2:1–3, 12; Genesis 3:1–7; Romans 5; Ephesians 2:1–3; Romans 8:18–25; Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 53; Galatians 4:4–7)

  • We believe that from all eternity, God determined in grace to save a great multitude of guilty sinners from every tribe and language and people and nation and to completely and totally eradicate all evil upon Jesus’s return.

    We believe that God justifies and sanctifies those who, by grace, have faith in Jesus and that he will one day glorify them—all to the praise of his glorious grace. In love, God commands and implores all people to repent and believe, having set his saving love on those he has chosen and having ordained Christ to be their Redeemer.

    (Gen. 3:15, Acts 2:38, Romans 3:20-28, 5:1-2, 8:30; Galatians 2:16, John 3:16; Mark 1:15; John 1:12-13; John 3:1-8; Acts 4:12)

  • We believe the Gospel is the proclamation that Jesus Christ has come into the world to save and redeem sinners. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, God credits his righteousness to us, by grace and faith alone, and declares us just.

    Through the Gospel, salvation has been provided through Jesus Christ for all men; and those who repent and believe in Him have been born of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift of eternal life, and become the children of God. The cross of Jesus Christ is the very center of God’s plan to save humanity. There can be no gospel, good news, apart from the preaching of Jesus’ work on the cross and subsequent resurrection.

    (1 Corinthians 15:3-6; Romans 3:23, 4:25, 8:3-4, John 1:14; Ephesians 1:7; 2 Corinthians 5:21)

  • Those who have been graciously delivered by the work of Jesus comprise the Church universal—a people from every tribe, tongue and nation. The local church is to be a testimony of the power of Jesus in the community. We practice the ordinances of the church: believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

    We believe the church is the bride of Christ and consists of all those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed through His blood, and are born again of the Holy Spirit. Christ is the Head of the Body, the church, which has been commissioned by Him to go into all the world as a witness, preaching the gospel to all nations. The local church is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together for the worship of God, for edification through the Word of God, for prayer, fellowship, the proclamation of the gospel, and observance of the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

    (Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 2:11-22; Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:41-47, Eph. 1:22, 23; 5:25–27; 1 Cor. 12:12–14; Matt. 28:19, 20; Acts 2:41, 42; 18:8; 1 Cor. 11:23–26)

  • We believe in the personal, glorious, and bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ with his holy angels when he will exercise his role as final Judge, and his kingdom will be consummated.

    We believe in the return of Jesus Christ to judge the living and the dead. At the time of the end there will be a new heaven and new earth. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust: the just to everlasting life and bliss, the unjust to everlasting punishment in Hell

    (Isaiah 2:4; 11:9; Matt. 16:27; Luke 12:40,48; 16:19-26; Acts 1:11; 17:31; Rom. 14:10; 2 Peter 3:7ff.; 1 John 2:28; 3:2; Jude 14; Rev. 1:18; 3:11; 20:1-22:13).

  • We believe, since all people are created in God’s image, all human life is sacred in every stage or condition from conception through natural death.

    God is intimately involved in the creation of every human being. Therefore, we believe all human life is sacred and of infinite worth in all its dimensions. That worth extends to every human being including pre-born babies, the elderly, the physically and mentally challenged, the chronically ill and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are, therefore, called to defend, protect, and value all human life at every stage or condition, from conception through natural death.

    (Genesis 1:27; Genesis 9:6; Jeremiah 1:5; Psalm 139:13-16; 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; Job 12:10; Job 31:15; Ephesians 2:10)

  • We believe marriage is the God-ordained, lifelong commitment of one man and one woman who are freely and totally committed to one another for life. We believe that sexual intimacy is Biblically reserved for the safe and secure covenant of marriage between one man and one woman.

    We believe that the term marriage has only one meaning, and that is marriage sanctioned by God, which joins one man and one woman in a single, exclusive, lifelong union, as delineated in Scripture and as part of God’s good creation prior to the entry of sin into the world. We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between one man and one woman who have made a covenant together through marriage. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate, sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between one man and one woman and any sexual activity outside of the covenant of marriage is sinful to God.

    (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:15-25; 3:1-20; Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Joshua 24:15; 1 Samuel 1:26-28; Psalms 51:5; 78:1-8; 127; 128; 139:13-16; Proverbs 1:8; 5:15-20; 6:20-22; 12:4; 13:24; 14:1; 17:6; 18:22; 22:6,15; 23:13-14; 24:3; 29:15,17; 31:10-31; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; 9:9; Malachi 2:14-16; Matthew 5:31-32; 18:2-5; 19:3-9; Mark 10:6-12; Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 7:1-16; Ephesians 5:21-33; 6:1-4; Colossians 3:18-21; 1 Timothy 5:8,14; 2 Timothy 1:3-5; Titus 2:3-5; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Peter 3:1-7.)

  • We believe that God’s good creation included the creation of humanity with two distinct sexes: male and female. Since these differences between the sexes are from the good and gracious God of the universe they are designed and given for the flourishing of communities.

    While unwaveringly affirming that God created humans male and female, we recognize that there are very rare but diagnosable medical conditions (i.e., intersex, etc.) where one’s sex may be indeterminable genetically or biologically at birth, and that such conditions require the utmost sensitivity, care, and qualified medical assistance. Beyond that, we believe that an individual struggling with gender dysphoria is one of the many consequences of living in a fallen world marred by sin and that to seek to alter one’s biological sex or gender through surgical, pharmacological, or other means is sinful and offensive to God’s good design as our Creator. We believe that such situations call for pastorally sensitive care and Biblically faithful counseling as necessary in each situation.

    We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, truth, and dignity. Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of the Church. We believe that calling people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ is not in and of itself hateful or harassing behavior.

    (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:15-25; 3:1-20; Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Joshua 24:15; 1 Samuel 1:26-28; Psalms 51:5; 78:1-8; 127; 128; 139:13-16; Proverbs 1:8; 5:15-20; 6:20-22; 12:4; 13:24; 14:1; 17:6; 18:22; 22:6,15; 23:13-14; 24:3; 29:15,17; 31:10-31; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; 9:9; Malachi 2:14-16; Matthew 5:31-32; 18:2-5; 19:3-9; Mark 10:6-12; Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 7:1-16; Ephesians 5:21-33; 6:1-4; Colossians 3:18-21; 1 Timothy 5:8,14; 2 Timothy 1:3-5; Titus 2:3-5; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Peter 3:1-7)

  • Baptism
    We believe that baptism was ordained by the Lord Jesus himself. People who place their faith and trust in Jesus are called to express their trust in Him through obeying His command to be baptized. Baptism doesn’t save a person but their obedience to be baptized is an obedient act where they publicly proclaim their trust in Jesus.

    Baptism is an holy ordinance, wherein the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, signifies our faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Baptism is to be administered to all those who profess repentance towards God, faith in, and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ; and to none other. The infants of professing believers are not to be baptized until they express personal faith and trust in Jesus. We believe this because there is neither command nor example in God’s word to baptize them. Baptism is rightly administered by immersion (when physically possible, except for the elderly or physically handicapped) in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

    The Lord’s Supper
    We believe the Lord’s Supper is an act of obedience whereby the members of a church, following earnest self-examination, commemorate together the saving sacrifice of Christ and their communion with him and one another.

    Eating the bread and drinking the cup is in no sense a sacrifice, but rather is designed to commemorate Christ’s dying love; to confirm the faith of his people; and to renew their mutual bond. The ordinances belong to the gathered church, marking off believers from unbelievers and making the church visible on earth.

    (Matthew 3:13–17; 26:26–29; 28:18–20; Acts 2:38–42; 8:36–38; 16:32–33; 20:7; Romans 6:4; 1 Corinthians 11:17–34; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:11–12; 1 Peter 3:20–21)

  • In the ministry of the church, both men and women are called to be and make disciples.. This means that men and women are encouraged to serve Christ and to be developed to their full potential in the manifold ministries of the people of God. Men and women, equally made in the image of God, enjoy equal access to God by faith in Christ Jesus and are both to be equipped and developed by their local church to greater spiritual maturity and are called to make disciples where they work, play, and live. Further, both men and women are essential and indispensable to a thriving local church and our leadership is committed to the spiritual formation of both men and women.

    Elders:
    Men and women are absolutely equal in essence, dignity and value but are distinct by divine design. As part of God’s good created order, men and women are to have different yet complementary roles and responsibilities in the church. As it relates to the church, men and women are both expected to lead; however, the office of elder is reserved for qualified and thoroughly vetted men. We believe the Bible teaches that each local church should be governed by a plurality of Elders.

    We believe the role of an Elder within the local church is to lead, feed, protect, and care for the people whom God has entrusted the elder to lead. We believe the distinctive leadership role of Elder within the local church given to qualified, thoroughly vetted men is grounded in creation, fall, and redemption and must not be sidelined by appeals to cultural developments.

    (Genesis 1-3; Ephesians 5:15-33; 1 Peter 3:1-7; Ephesians 4:25-32; Colossians 3:18-4:1; 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12; 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12, 1 Timothy 3; Titus 1).

    Deacons:
    We believe the role of deacon within the local church is reserved for qualified and thoroughly vetted women and men. Their role is to serve the administrative, organizational, and service-oriented needs of our local church. Deacons serve under and with the leadership of the Elders.

    (Acts 6:1-7, 1 Timothy 3:8-13)

    Community Group Leaders:
    Our community group leaders are led by qualified and vetted women and men who graciously offer to open their lives and homes to others so that, through the power of God’s Word and the Holy Spirit, they are conformed into a greater Christlikeness. They are responsible for teaching God’s word within our community groups, guiding discussion, answering questions, and pointing one another to Christ in everyday life. Further, our community group leaders are on the front lines of counseling, caring for, and meeting the needs of those who call King’s Table Church home. Alongside the elders and deacons, we believe our community groups and our leaders are essential to see people discipled in Christ.

    (Acts 2, Matt 28:19-20, 1 Thess 2:8, Proverbs 27:17)

  • We believe God, through His Holy Spirit, gives all believers spiritual gifts to serve God and His church. The gifts are to be exercised under the Lordship of Christ.

    Spiritual gifts are for strengthening brothers and sisters by helping their faith not give way as easily when they have troubles in their lives. Spiritual gifts are given to help empower the church to evangelize the world. The Bible commands us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts. We believe there are a diversity of gifts given. The gifts we have and the faith to exercise them are given to us by God in varying measures. The aim of all spiritual gifts is that in everything God might be glorified through Jesus Christ. The most important measure of our spirituality are not our gifts but our godliness. Without love, the gifts are worthless.

    (Romans 1:11-23; 1 Thessalonians 3:2; Luke 24:48-49, Acts 4:29-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1, 24-25; 1 Corinthians 12-14)

What We Believe

What we want to be marked by.

We exist to see people follow Jesus and make disciples of him.

We hope to achieve this through emphasizing evangelism, discipleship, and caring for vulnerable families and individuals.
