Mark 6:14-29 〰️ Herod the Coward 〰️
Well, we’re here at the last week of Mark Vol. 1! There are some natural breaks in any work of writing, but we prayerfully found Mark to divide into thirds pretty well. We’ll head over to an Old Testament book next and return to Mark later– but for this week, let’s take some time to reflect as a group on what we’ve observed and learned individually and collectively so far. Sometimes we move as such fast speeds that we don’t take as much time to reflect on what the Lord has been teaching us during a season. I (Brazinski) am very goal-driven and find myself moving so fast onto the next thing, that I don’t take as much time to reflect and sit still in something, and this is especially true with the pace of a church plant!
1. Below are some open-ended and pondering questions that can be applied to any passage of Scripture. There are two options for questions. To be clear, there’s no wrong choice as both are great options to get conversations going! The first set is passage-specific and will probably be the best option for groups that have just recently gotten started or have a lot of newer folks (any group can use this– it’s up to you)! We encourage you to share these with your group so they can use them in their personal study of God's Word as well! This "format" is called the Swedish Method and is open-ended for a reason. Hopefully, these questions will be encouraging for your group as we all wrestle with what it means to faithfully follow Jesus and witness to those around us!
2. The second set of questions is for reflection and a time for us to ask questions in response to our time in the first portion of Mark and for those who have been in a group for a while.
3. The third is something my CG leader did with us recently and it prompted some great conversation and opportunity for us to specifically pray for one another. We shared something in our life that was bringing us joy, something that was hard or junk, and an update on our relationship with Jesus. After each person shared, we prayed for them and had a chance to love on one another– it was really sweet and an excellent opportunity to grow in our relationships with one another!
You absolutely don’t have to stick with just one of these question sets– feel free to mix and match whatever you feel will best serve your group! As always, these guides are meant to be a blessing to you and your group, not a set of rules or laws you should follow.
Option 1 (Passage-specific)
What stood out to you from the passage?
Does anything in this passage remind you of another part of Scripture?
Do you have any questions?
What are some repeating words, phrases, or concepts in this passage?
Does anything in this passage remind you of another part of Scripture?
What questions does this passage raise for you?
What does this passage tell you about God?
What does this passage tell you about yourself?
How can this passage help you see your need for God?
How do you think this passage is meant to affect your life?
Option 2 (Open-ended and reflective)
What has stood out to you over in last few months in Mark?
What’s something you have felt the Lord wanting to teach you?
What (if anything) have you been reading in Scripture recently? What’s something you’ve learned?
Has Mark 1-6 prompted any questions?
Is there anyone you’ve been praying for recently? How have you seen the Lord working in their life?
What’s one way you want to see your relationship with the Lord grow this summer?
What are your plans to promote that?
Option 3 (Joy, Junk, Jesus)
What is something in your life that’s bringing you joy
What is something in your life that’s junky
How is Jesus working in your life
